About this Route
This GPX follows the direct route from the Coire Cas car park to Cairn Gorm by Windy Ridge, returning the same way. It covers 6.7 km and gains about 614 m. Allow roughly 3½ to 5 hours, depending on weather and the amount of snow or ice on the upper mountain.
From the car park, climb beside the ski area towards Sròn an Aonaich and Windy Ridge. The lower section uses obvious tracks, but ski roads, lift infrastructure and service routes create several tempting alternatives, so keep checking the GPX. The route reaches the Ptarmigan area before continuing onto the open plateau and the final path to Cairn Gorm's 1,245 m summit. The weather station makes the top easy to recognise in clear conditions, but cloud, strong wind and drifting snow can turn this into a serious navigation exercise.
Return by the same route through Ptarmigan and down Windy Ridge. This is not the Northern Corries circuit and it does not visit Ben Macdui. The ski centre can feel busy at the start while the summit plateau is a very different environment: exposed, cold and without a simple escape once visibility disappears. Check the mountain forecast, carry proper clothing and navigation equipment, and never assume the funicular or ski lifts will provide a way down.
A short mileage does not make Cairn Gorm a small day; the height, wind and plateau weather set the terms.

Route Waypoints
Start at Cairngorm Mountain's main car park. Check the forecast and identify the Windy Ridge line before leaving the buildings.
Follow the rising track beside the ski area. Ignore service roads that cut across the slope and keep to the GPX line.
Continue onto the broad shoulder. The car park begins to drop from view and the route becomes increasingly exposed to wind.
Climb the stony ridge towards Ptarmigan. Loose stones, ice and strong crosswinds are common, even when the car park feels sheltered.
Pass the upper ski-area buildings and locate the onward summit path. Do not rely on the buildings being open.
Leave the ski area for the open plateau. In mist or snow the path can vanish, so take and follow an accurate bearing.
Reach the weather station and summit cairn at 1,245 m. Move away from buildings only if you can navigate confidently.
Retrace the plateau path to Ptarmigan, then descend Windy Ridge and the lower track to the car park.
Essential Tips
Conditions at 1,245 m may bear little resemblance to those at the car park. Pay particular attention to wind, cloud base and freezing level.
Buildings, lifts and the funicular may be closed or inaccessible. Carry everything needed to descend under your own steam.
Several tracks cross the lower route. Follow the GPX and your map rather than assuming the widest track is correct.
Snow can cover paths and create cornices away from this line. Winter skills, an ice axe and crampons may be necessary.
