About this Route
This GPX climbs Cadair Berwyn from Pistyll Rhaeadr by way of the upper valley, Llyn Lluncaws and Moel Sych. The out-and-back route is 7.2 km with about 615 m of ascent. It is a compact mountain walk rather than an easy visit to the waterfall, and 4 to 5 hours is a sensible allowance.
Leave the waterfall car park on the path climbing above Pistyll Rhaeadr, then follow the quieter line into the cwm of Nant y Llyn. The ground can be wet as the path works towards Llyn Lluncaws, a small lake tucked beneath the main ridge. From the lake, the steepest part of the day climbs onto Moel Sych. The path is rough and eroded in places, and care is needed on the descent. Once on the ridge, turn north for the broad crossing to Cadair Berwyn's main summit at 832 m. The high ground is open and exposed, with several nearby tops that can be confusing in mist.
Return across Moel Sych and descend by the same lake-side route. This GPX does not continue to Cadair Bronwen or make a longer Berwyn ridge circuit. The narrow road to Pistyll Rhaeadr and the small parking area can both be busy, while the waterfall paths attract visitors who may not be heading onto the mountain. Above the falls, carry full hill kit and an independent way to navigate.
The waterfall is only the beginning; above it, the Berwyns quickly become quiet, open mountain country.

Start near the foot of the waterfall. Parking is limited and the approach road is narrow, so arrive early and park considerately.
Take the climbing path beside and above Pistyll Rhaeadr. Keep back from wet rock and unprotected drops near the gorge.
Continue into the upper valley on the path towards Llyn Lluncaws. The ground becomes quieter, rougher and often boggy.
Reach the lake beneath Moel Sych. This is the last sheltered-feeling spot before the steep climb onto the ridge.
Climb steeply from the lake, following the worn path through grass and broken ground. Take care here when descending.
Gain the 827 m top and turn north along the broad ridge. In cloud, use a compass to avoid drifting onto the wrong slope.
Reach the main summit at 832 m. Confirm your position carefully, as several high points and ridge junctions lie close by.
Retrace the ridge to Moel Sych, descend to Llyn Lluncaws and follow the outward path back past the waterfall.
Essential Tips
The final drive to Pistyll Rhaeadr is narrow with few passing places. Leave extra time and do not block gateways or verges.
The slope above Llyn Lluncaws is steep and can be greasy. Poles may help on the descent, but they are no substitute for secure footwear.
Cadair Berwyn and Moel Sych can be difficult to distinguish in mist. Carry a map and compass and check every change of direction.
Rock around Pistyll Rhaeadr is often wet and polished. Stay on the path and supervise children and dogs closely.
