About this Route
This is a long out-and-back from the Cairngorm Mountain car park to Ben Macdui, using Windy Ridge to gain the plateau. The GPX measures 19.2 km, gains 1,154 m and gives a walking-time estimate of about 6 hours 44 minutes. Allow a full day: the plateau is high, exposed and demanding to navigate when cloud or snow removes the paths and landmarks.
From Coire Cas, follow the Windy Ridge path towards the Ptarmigan building, then continue to Cairn Gorm. Leave the summit area on the plateau path towards Stob Coire an t-Sneachda, keeping well back from the corrie edges. The ground becomes broad and featureless as the route heads across the high plateau.
Continue past the paths around Lochan Buidhe and follow the cairned line south-west. The final approach rises gradually across stony ground to Ben Macdui's large summit cairn and trig point at 1,309 m. This is Britain's second-highest mountain, but the wide plateau means the summit can be surprisingly difficult to locate in poor visibility.
Return by the same line, carefully reversing every plateau junction before climbing back over Cairn Gorm and descending Windy Ridge. Do not be tempted towards the steep corrie rims or Feith Buidhe in cloud. Carry a map and compass and know how to use them; a GPX alone is not enough here. Snow patches can linger into summer, while winter turns this into a mountaineering journey requiring suitable equipment and experience. The plateau itself is extremely exposed and tricky to navigate except in perfect conditions.

Start at Cairngorm Mountain and take the signed Windy Ridge path uphill.
Climb the broad ridge beside the ski area, keeping to the walking path rather than ski-service tracks.
Pass the upper station and continue south on the summit path towards Cairn Gorm.
Cross the 1,245 m summit and follow the plateau path south-west, away from the northern corrie edge.
Continue across high, exposed ground, staying well back from corniced corrie rims in winter.
Keep to the cairned Ben Macdui path as routes split across the plateau; confirm the bearing here.
Reach the large cairn and trig point at 1,309 m, then return along the exact outward line.
Recross the plateau and Cairn Gorm before descending Windy Ridge to Coire Cas.
Essential Tips
The plateau can become featureless in cloud. Carry map and compass skills as well as the downloaded GPX.
Cliffs and winter cornices border the route. Give the rims a wide berth, especially near Stob Coire an t-Sneachda.
The automated estimate is optimistic for bad weather or rough plateau conditions. Carry enough food, water and spare clothing.
Snow can persist well beyond winter. Ice axe, crampons and winter navigation skills may be essential.
