About this Route

This GPX climbs Aran Fawddwy from the head of Cwm Cywarch and returns the same way. It covers 11.8 km with about 807 m of ascent, taking around 5 to 7 hours. The route is quieter than the northern Aran ridge and crosses rough, wet country where the path is not fully waymarked.

From the small parking area, follow the track north from the end of the road and take the left branch beside the stream below Glasgwm. The path climbs steeply out of the cwm, passing waterfalls and rough crags before reaching broader moorland. Continue on the path chain beneath or around Glasgwm and towards the Aran ridge. The final ascent reaches Aran Fawddwy's summit at 905 m. Steep ground drops towards Creiglyn Dyfi nearby, and the plateau can be confusing in cloud.

Return to Cwm Cywarch by the same southern approach. This GPX does not continue north to Aran Benllyn or complete the Glasgwm circular. Paths and fences are intermittent, peat can be deep and stream crossings become difficult after heavy rain. Carry a map and compass, leave enough daylight for the steep descent into the cwm and keep well back from corrie edges.

The Aran Fawddwy path starts at the head of Cwm Cywarch and is not fully waymarked.

Check streams after rain

Waterfalls and side burns rise quickly. Turn back if a crossing or wet slab looks unsafe.

Stay clear of corrie edges

Steep ground lies near Creiglyn Dyfi. Give it plenty of room in mist, wind or snow.

Save energy for the final descent

The path into Cwm Cywarch is steep, wet and rough. Do not leave the summit too late.
