Did You Know?

  • The name originates from the Old English 'cweorn' (millstone) and 'clif' (cliff or slope), referencing the gritstone edges that were historically quarried for millstones and building materials.
  • For centuries, the area served as a royal hunting forest and deer park; the 18th-century writer Lady Mary Wortley Montagu lived at Wharncliffe Lodge and famously compared the views here to the finest landscapes in Italy.
  • Wharncliffe Crags, which fringe the western side of the Chase, were instrumental in the birth of British rock climbing; the pioneer J.W. Puttrell developed many routes here in the late 1880s.
  • The summit offers a specific, earned vista: looking west across the Little Don Valley, you can pick out the high plateau of Bleaklow and the gritstone cap of Margery Hill on the distant horizon.
  • Local folklore identifies the area as the home of the 'Dragon of Wantley' (a corruption of Wortley), a beast supposedly slain by a knight in spiked armour within the crags below the summit.
  • It is one of the few places in the Peak District where the silence of the high heather is regularly punctuated by the rhythmic clatter of freight trains on the trans-Pennine line in the valley below.
