About Wee Queensberry

A modest summit in the Lowther Hills, sitting in the shadow of its much larger namesake, Queensberry Hill. The ascent involves walking through typical Southern Uplands terrain of grass and moorland. Though relatively low by Scottish standards, its position offers worthwhile views across the surrounding hill country and towards the Solway lowlands.

Geology
Beneath your feet, Wee Queensberry is built from the Queensberry Formation and Moffat Shale Group, layered with sandstone, mudstone, siltstone, claystone, chert, and conglomerate.

Did You Know?

  • The name 'Wee Queensberry' distinguishes this hill from its prominent neighbour Queensberry (697m), which lies just over a kilometre to the northeast and dominates the local skyline.
  • Queensberry itself takes its name from the Marquess of Queensberry title, though the 'Queen' element may derive from an older Gaelic or Brittonic hill name that predates the noble connection.
  • The hill is often climbed as part of a ridge walk that takes in its larger neighbour, with walkers typically ascending Queensberry first before dropping to the col and continuing over Wee Queensberry.
  • Despite its diminutive qualifier, Wee Queensberry still qualifies as a Dodd and Donald Dewey, making it a worthy target for classification baggers working through the Southern Uplands lists.
