Wanlock Dod

A rounded summit in the Lowther Hills rising to 552 metres, commanding the high moorland west of Wanlockhead. The terrain is typical Southern Uplands grassland, rolling and remote, with extensive views across the lead mining country. Often climbed alongside neighbouring Lowther Hill and its distinctive radar station to the north.

• •The name derives from 'Wanlock', an old Scots form of 'Wanloch', itself from the Gaelic 'bhan loch' meaning 'white or pale lake', with 'Dod' being the characteristic Southern Uplands term for a rounded hill.
• •The hill overlooks Wanlockhead, once Britain's highest village and centre of Scotland's lead mining industry from medieval times until the early 20th century.
• •Wanlock Dod sits at the heart of the Lowther Hills' distinctive rounded topography, shaped by millennia of weathering into smooth, whale-backed ridges rather than the dramatic peaks found further north.
• •The summit offers views north to Lowther Hill with its white golf-ball radar station, east across the Mennock Pass, and south towards the Dumfriesshire uplands.
• •Its classification as a Dodd is particularly apt here, the term being thoroughly at home in these Southern Uplands where rounded summits are the rule rather than the exception.
