About Truskmore [Trosc Mor]

As the highest point in County Sligo and the Dartry Mountains, this broad, high plateau is more famous for the dramatic cliffs at its edges than its actual summit. While the top features a prominent telecommunications mast, the far-reaching views across the Gleniff Horseshoe and out to Donegal Bay are exceptional.

Did You Know?

  • The name Trosc Mór translates from Irish as 'big cod'. While an unusual name for a mountain, it likely refers to the peak's bulky, rounded profile when viewed from certain angles, resembling the shape of the fish.
  • Truskmore serves as the County Top for both Sligo and Leitrim. Although the true summit is in Sligo, the highest point in County Leitrim is found just a short distance away on the mountain's southeastern slope.
  • The summit is dominated by a 140-metre-tall television transmitter. Opened in 1962, it was a critical piece of infrastructure for Ireland's early national broadcasting, and the access road now provides a very functional, if unglamorous, route to the top.
  • The mountain sits at the centre of a remarkable limestone plateau. While the summit area is relatively flat moorland, it is flanked by the dramatic cliffs of the Gleniff Horseshoe and the iconic prow of Benwiskin to the west.
  • On a clear day, the specific landmarks visible from the top are extensive. To the north, the sharp peak of Errigal in Donegal is easily identified, while to the south, the view stretches across the Carrowkeel tombs toward the Nephin Beg range.
  • Despite being the highest point in the region, you may find the best views are actually found by walking away from the summit, unless your idea of a mountain vista includes a very large steel antenna.
