About Leean Mountain

Rising above the eastern end of the Glencar Valley, this often-overlooked hump in the Dartry Mountains offers a quiet, peaty alternative to the busier peaks nearby. The ascent across heathery slopes leads to a broad summit plateau, providing a superb perspective of the dramatic limestone cliffs of Benbulbin and the waters of Glencar Lough.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Irish 'Sliabh Liatháin', meaning 'greyish mountain', a reference to the weathered limestone and scree that characterize the Dartry range.
  • Standing at the southern edge of the Dartry Mountains, the summit overlooks the head of the Glencar Valley, offering a clear view of the source waters for the famous Glencar Waterfall.
  • Hillwalkers often pair Leean with the nearby Srón Garbh to complete a horseshoe route around the glacial cirques that define the local landscape.
  • The mountain serves as a natural boundary marker between the wild limestone plateaus of County Sligo and the greener, rolling drumlin country of North Leitrim.
  • The name 'Grey Mountain' is a remarkably accurate description for a summit that spends a significant portion of the year obscured by low-hanging Atlantic cloud.
