Did You Know?
- •The name is derived from the Irish word Inis, meaning island, which reflects its geography as a distinct landmass rising from the sea.
- •Though still referred to as an island, Inch was physically connected to the Donegal mainland in the 19th century via two large embankments that reclaimed the surrounding sloblands for agriculture.
- •Looking southeast across the water, the summit provides an excellent perspective of the Grianan of Aileach, a restored prehistoric stone ringfort perched on the neighbouring Grianan Hill.
- •Because it rises directly from sea level with no higher ground nearby, the hill qualifies as a Marilyn, a classification usually reserved for much larger mountains with at least 150 metres of prominence.
- •Calling it an island is now largely a matter of tradition; since the mid-1800s, walkers have been far more likely to arrive at the trailhead by car than by boat.
