About Glascarns Hill

Rising to nearly 600 metres in the heart of the Bluestack Mountains, this rugged, peat-clad height offers a wilderness experience far from the popular coast. Situated north of the main ridge, it commands wide views across the remote Finn Valley and towards the jagged silhouettes of the Derryveagh Mountains.

Did You Know?

  • Derived from the Irish Glascharn, the name translates as the ‘green cairn’ or ‘grey stony mound’, likely referring to the weathered granite scree found among the summit grasses.
  • It forms part of the sprawling Bluestack Mountains, a wild granite massif in central Donegal known for its complex ridges and some of the most extensive blanket bog in Ireland.
  • The summit offers a clear perspective on the remote upper reaches of the Finn Valley, with the distinctive cone of Errigal often visible on the northern horizon in clear weather.
  • Navigating the approaches involves a masterclass in Irish 'hagging', where the direct route is rarely the quickest one through the saturated, undulating peat.
