About Cro Bheithe [Crovehy]

Rising above the rugged landscape of west Donegal near Dungloe, this modest but prominent Marilyn offers a wild, untamed character. The terrain is a classic mix of exposed granite and Atlantic blanket bog. From the summit, walkers earn excellent views across the Rosses toward the distinct, quartzite peak of Errigal.

Did You Know?

  • The name likely stems from the Irish Cruach Bheithe, meaning 'hill of the birch,' hinting at a landscape that was once more wooded than the peat-covered slopes found today.
  • As a Marilyn—a hill with at least 150 metres of prominence—it stands in relative isolation, providing clear sightlines over the intricate mosaic of loughs that define the Rosses.
  • To the east, the skyline is dominated by the Derryveagh Mountains, where the sharp profiles of Errigal and Muckish are clearly visible on a fine day.
  • The approach requires careful footwork through hummocky ground and heather, a terrain that successfully discourages anyone who isn't prepared to get their boots properly dirty.
