About Benbulbin [Binn Ghulbain]
This iconic flat-topped landmark dominates the Sligo skyline. Formed as a glacial nunatak, its sheer limestone cliffs give way to a surprisingly broad, level plateau. The ascent from the south provides a gentler approach than its formidable northern prow, offering expansive views across Sligo Bay towards the distant Ox Mountains.

Did You Know?
- •The name derives from the Irish 'Binn Ghulbain', meaning Gulban’s Peak. This refers to Conall Gulban, a 5th-century king and son of Niall of the Nine Hostages, who was said to have been fostered in the area.
- •W.B. Yeats immortalised the mountain in his poetry, most notably in 'Under Ben Bulben'. Per his own request, the poet is buried in the churchyard at Drumcliffe, positioned so that his grave sits directly beneath the mountain's limestone cliffs.
- •In Irish mythology, the mountain is the site of the tragic death of the hero Diarmuid Ua Duibhne. While hunting with the Fianna, he was gored by the enchanted Boar of Benbulbin, a creature he was fated never to kill.
- •During the last Ice Age, Benbulbin was a nunatak—a mountain peak that remained exposed above the surface of the ice sheet while the surrounding landscape was scoured and shaped by glacial movement.
- •The mountain's north-facing cliffs host a unique collection of arctic-alpine plants, including the Fringed Sandwort. These species are glacial relics, having survived in this specific microclimate since the ice retreated 10,000 years ago.
- •While the northern face presents a sheer limestone wall that looks entirely impassable, the summit is actually a vast, boggy plateau where the most immediate danger is walking off the edge while lost in the mist.
