About Aghla More
Tucked within the rugged Derryveagh Mountains, this quartzite-capped peak offers a pathless, wild ascent typical of Donegal’s 'Seven Sisters' range. Positioned between Muckish and Errigal, the summit provides a dramatic, direct perspective of Errigal’s iconic cone and the vast, glaciated expanse of the Poisoned Glen.

Did You Know?
- •The name is derived from the Irish An Eachla Mhór, meaning 'The Great Ridge.' This distinguishes it from its slightly smaller northern neighbour, Aghla Beg.
- •It forms a central link in the Seven Sisters, a celebrated chain of peaks in the Derryveagh Mountains that includes the better-known giants, Muckish and Errigal.
- •The summit serves as an exceptional vantage point for looking directly into the deep U-shaped trough of the Poisoned Glen, while looking northwards reveals the remote Atlantic outlines of Tory Island and Inishbofin.
- •The mountain is largely composed of Dalradian quartzite; this hard rock resists erosion, resulting in the pale, shattered scree slopes that give the range its distinctive, bleached appearance.
- •Despite being the 'Great' ridge, it stands less than twenty metres taller than Aghla Beg, a distinction that feels increasingly academic when navigating the boggy, peat-hags of the col between the two.
