About Torr na h-Iolaire West Top

A modest summit on the ridge running east from Torr na h-Iolaire in the remote country north of Loch Duich. As a subordinate top rather than a distinct peak, it sees few dedicated visits, though walkers traversing the ridge from the higher eastern ground will cross it. The terrain is typical of this quiet corner of the Western Highlands.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from Scottish Gaelic, with 'Torr na h-Iolaire' meaning 'hill of the eagle', a reference to the golden eagles that historically hunted across these remote ridges above Glen Elchaig.
  • This western top sits roughly 800 metres west along the ridge from the main summit of Torr na h-Iolaire, itself a Graham at 660 metres, making this subsidiary top nearly 135 metres lower than its parent peak.
  • The hill lies in one of the least-visited parts of the Northwest Highlands, with access typically requiring a long approach through Glen Elchaig or from Killilan, keeping casual visitors to a minimum.
