About Sneer Hill

Tucked away in the northern Cheviots, this 452-metre Tump offers a quiet, grassy alternative to its more famous neighbours. It sits on the ridge overlooking the Harthope Valley, providing an excellent vantage point to survey the massive bulk of The Cheviot and the craggy profile of Hedgehope Hill.

Did You Know?

  • The name is thought to derive from the Old English 'snare', referring to a narrow place or a topographical 'noose' formed by the surrounding watercourses, or potentially a dialect term for a sharp, cold wind.
  • The hill is most frequently climbed as a secondary objective on the approach to the higher summits from Langleeford, sitting on the high ground between the Harthope and Carey Burns.
  • From the summit, the view south-east is dominated by the steep, heather-clad flanks of Hedgehope Hill, while to the north, the rounded prehistoric hillfort of Yeavering Bell is visible on the horizon.
  • Despite the name, the hill is unlikely to express any literal contempt for your fitness, though the inevitable Cheviot peat bogs at its base are known to test a walker's sense of humour.
