About Sgurr Nighean Mhic Choinich

Did You Know?

  • The name Sgurr Nighean Mhic Choinich comes from Scottish Gaelic, meaning 'Peak of the Daughter of MacKenzie' (from 'sgurr' meaning peak, 'nighean' meaning daughter, and 'MacCoinnich' being the Gaelic form of MacKenzie), though which daughter or which branch of Clan MacKenzie is commemorated has been lost to time.
  • The grid reference NM742869 places this summit in the heart of Moidart, the coastal district whose sheltered sea lochs and steep hillsides provided refuge for Bonnie Prince Charlie after Culloden in 1746.
  • At just over 500 metres, this hill sits in that awkward height range that misses out on Corbett status but requires committed navigation through trackless terrain more challenging than many higher, better-defined peaks.
