Did You Know?

  • The name is an English simplification of the Gaelic 'An Binnein', which translates as 'the pinnacle' or 'the small peak', a reference to its sharp profile when viewed from the waters of the Sound of Raasay.
  • The hill serves as a prominent backdrop to Portree; the lower slopes are managed as part of the Portree Community Woods, where local efforts have focused on planting native broadleaf trees to encourage biodiversity.
  • From the summit, walkers are rewarded with a perfectly framed view of the Trotternish Ridge to the north, including the Old Man of Storr, while the island of Raasay and its distinctive flat-topped peak, Dun Caan, sit directly across the water.
  • It is remarkably steep for its size, providing a short, sharp lung-opener that manages to feel like a proper mountain ascent before you've even finished your morning coffee in the town below.
