About Teinneasabhal [Teinnasval]

Rising from the rugged interior of Lewis, this substantial hill offers a wilderness experience deep in the Uig hills. Its slopes are defined by the ancient, weathered Lewisian gneiss typical of the Outer Hebrides. The summit provides a stark, beautiful perspective over the remote lochans of the interior and the nearby peak of Mealasbhal.

Did You Know?

  • The name reflects the Norse-Gaelic heritage of the islands; the suffix '-val' is a corruption of the Old Norse 'fjall', meaning mountain, a common marker left by Viking settlers across the Outer Hebrides.
  • It is often climbed in tandem with its higher neighbor, Mealasbhal, which sits less than two kilometers to the north across a high, rocky saddle.
  • The terrain is a classic example of 'knock and lochan' topography, where ancient Lewisian gneiss has been scoured by glaciers into a chaotic landscape of rocky mounds and small, peat-stained pools.
  • From the summit, the view to the west opens up to the Atlantic coastline and the white sands of Camas Uig, while to the south lie the remote, trackless moors of the Pairc forest.
  • Despite its modest height, the hill is classified as a Hump (a hill with a prominence of at least 100 metres) due to the deep drop into the surrounding glens.
