About Stuc Odhar

Rising quietly above the waters of Glen Finglas, this rounded Trossachs hill offers a rugged, often pathless alternative to the busier peaks nearby. Its heathery slopes provide an excellent vantage point for surveying the steep western face of Ben Ledi and the serrated skyline of the Arrochar Alps to the west.

Did You Know?

  • Derived from the Scottish Gaelic, the name translates as the 'dun' or 'sallow' peak, describing the muted brownish-grey hues of the grasses and heather that dominate the summit landscape.
  • The hill is a significant feature of the Glen Finglas estate, a former royal hunting forest that is now part of the Great Trossachs Forest nature restoration project managed by the Woodland Trust.
  • Because it is physically overshadowed by the much taller Ben Ledi to the east, the summit remains exceptionally quiet, offering a grandstand view of the 'tourist' mountain's more impressive and craggy western profile.
  • For hillwalkers seeking a full day out, it is most logically climbed as part of a high-level circuit from Brig o' Turk, connecting with the neighbouring top of Meall Cala to overlook the expanse of the Finglas reservoir.
  • The hill is a masterclass in Trossachs camouflage; from certain angles near Loch Venachar, it blends so seamlessly into the bulk of the higher ridges behind it that you might easily miss it entirely.
