Did You Know?

  • It forms part of the sprawling massif of Beinn a’ Bhuird, the eleventh highest mountain in Britain. The area remains a vital stronghold for rare arctic-alpine flora that thrives in the harsh climate.
  • The 'old GR' suffix refers to historical mapping discrepancies from earlier Munro Tables. Modern satellite surveys eventually settled long-standing disputes over which granite bump on the plateau was actually the highest point.
  • The plateau is famous for its spectacular granite tors, which are weathered rock towers that survived the ice sheets. They often look remarkably like ruined prehistoric fortresses to the passing hiker.
  • Its name translates from Gaelic as the 'Big Rough Peak,' which is a fairly accurate description of the local terrain. Expect a high-altitude boulder field that seems specifically designed to test the structural integrity of your ankles.
  • Navigation here in a whiteout is so notoriously difficult that it can humble even the most experienced map-readers. Local ptarmigan have been known to watch lost hikers with what can only be described as pitying condescension.
