About Stonefield Hill

Rising above the southern shores of Loch Earn near St. Fillans, this substantial Tump offers a quieter alternative to its more famous neighbours. The terrain is typical of the southern Highlands—rugged, heathery, and often trackless. It serves as an excellent vantage point for surveying the transition from the Lowlands to the Trossachs.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a straightforward English construction likely describing the rocky nature of the terrain or the stony pastures found on the lower slopes near the loch.
  • The summit provides a clear, perpendicular perspective of the long stretch of Loch Earn, with the distinctive whaleback shape of Ben Chonzie visible across the water to the north.
  • Stonefield Hill is often climbed from the south via Glen Artney or included in a longer circuit of the lower ridges surrounding the more dominant Ben Vorlich.
  • Situated within the historic royal deer forest of Glenartney, the hill remains part of a landscape managed for red deer, making sightings frequent during the autumn rut.
  • At 769.6 metres, it sits just a few centimetres short of the 770-metre mark, a margin that makes no physical difference to the climber but might irritate a particularly meticulous map-reader.
