About Stob na Boine Druim-fhinn

Rising steeply above Loch Goil, this rugged Graham offers a wilder experience than its height suggests. Its terrain is quintessential Argyll: a testing combination of steep grass, boggy hollows, and rocky outcrops. The summit provides a grandstand view of the Arrochar Alps, looking directly across to the jagged peaks of The Cobbler.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Stob na Bóinne Druim-fhinn', meaning 'Peak of the White-backed Cow'. This likely refers to the way snow or quartz on the ridge resembles the distinctive white stripe found on the spines of certain traditional Highland cattle breeds.
  • In January 1949, a US Army Air Forces B-29 Superfortress crashed into the hill's western slopes during a flight to Iceland. All twenty men on board perished; today, remnants of the four engines and twisted fuselage remain on the hillside as a remote and poignant memorial.
  • Most walkers approach from the village of Lochgoilhead, ascending via the ridge of An Socach. The route is relentless but rewards the effort with an evolving perspective of the nearby Arrochar Alps, specifically the massive profiles of Beinn Ime and Beinn Narnain.
  • The summit panorama is dominated by the deep waters of Loch Goil and the long reach of Loch Long. On a clear day, the view extends past the Holy Loch toward the Firth of Clyde, offering a sharp contrast between the wild Cowal peninsula and the industrial horizon.
  • Despite the evocative name, the ascent is far more likely to involve discovering exactly how much water a 'well-drained' Scottish hillside can actually hold than it is to involve spotting a legendary white-backed cow.
