Did You Know?

  • The name originates from the Scottish Gaelic Stob Coire na Gaibhre, translating to the 'peak of the corrie of the goat.' Historically, these high, rocky corries served as a summer refuge for feral goats, descendants of which are still occasionally seen in the more remote corners of the Lochaber mountains.
  • The upper slopes are composed primarily of white quartzite. This pale, shattered rock covers the ridge so densely that the summits often appear to be capped with snow even in midsummer, giving the Grey Corries their distinctive name.
  • Though categorized as a Munro Top rather than a standalone Munro, its position makes it a significant milestone for those completing the full traverse of the Grey Corries ridge, marking the final high point before the long descent toward the Lairig Leacach bothy.
  • The summit provides an exceptional perspective of the 'Easains'—Stob a' Choire Mheadhoin and Stob Coire Easain—which rise steeply on the opposite side of the deep glacial trench of the Lairig Leacach to the east.
  • Spending a day on these boulder-strewn slopes is an efficient way to test the build quality of your walking boots; the sharp, abrasive quartzite is notoriously effective at scuffing leather and thinning out rubber soles.
