About Stob Coire an t-Sneachda

Perched above the precipitous headwall of the Northern Corries, this dramatic Munro Top offers a spectacular sense of scale. While the approach from the Coire Cas car park is relatively short, the summit provides an airy, jagged vantage point over the dark, fractured granite cliffs of the 'Corrie of the Snow' below.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Gaelic as the 'Peak of the Corrie of the Snow'. This refers to the deep, north-facing hollow beneath the summit where snow patches frequently survive through the summer months long after the surrounding plateau has cleared.
  • The hill’s northern cliffs are among the most significant winter climbing arenas in Scotland; its granite buttresses and gullies provide dozens of classic routes that serve as a primary training ground for British mountaineers.
  • It is most often visited as part of a high-level circuit from the Cairn Gorm mountain car park, linking the summit with its neighbour Cairn Lochan to provide a walk along the rim of the plateau that is far more dramatic than the ascent of Cairn Gorm itself.
  • The summit offers a commanding view directly down the Lairig Ghru, the great glacial trench of the Cairngorms, with the massive western flank of Braeriach and the jagged peaks of Sgor an Lochain Uaine dominating the skyline across the pass.
  • In peak season, the 'Corrie of the Snow' might more accurately be called the 'Corrie of the Crampon Marks', such is its popularity with local mountaineering courses and weekend climbers.
