About Stob Coir' an Albannaich

Rising steeply south of Glen Etive, this rugged Munro offers a secluded alternative to the busier Glencoe peaks. Its character is defined by the dramatic crags of its northern corries, which overlook a wild, pathless interior. Often climbed with Meall nan Eun, it provides a taxing but rewarding day in a high, stony landscape.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic for the 'Peak of the Scotsman's Corrie.' While 'Alba' is the name for Scotland, 'Albannach' specifically refers to a Scotsman, though the specific individual or event that gave the corrie its name is lost to time.
  • It is most frequently tackled from the road-end in Glen Etive, starting near Coileitir. The route often involves a crossing of the River Etive, which can be challenging or even impassable following heavy rainfall.
  • The summit provides an exceptional vantage point overlooking the granite slabs of the Etive hills and the long reach of Loch Etive. To the north, the sharp profiles of Buachaille Etive Mòr and the Glencoe peaks dominate the skyline.
  • Hillwalkers almost always pair this mountain with its neighbour to the east, Meall nan Eun. The traverse between them involves descending to the Bealach an t-Snaidhm, a name meaning 'Pass of the Knot.'
  • Despite the name suggesting it belongs to a Scotsman, the mountain’s notoriously spongy lower slopes and hidden peat hags are perfectly happy to swallow the boots of any hiker, regardless of their nationality.
