About Meall nan Eun

Tucked away east of Glen Etive, this rounded Munro often feels like an afterthought to its rugged neighbor, Stob Coir'an Albannaich. Its broad, dome-like summit plateau is deceptively steep on the approach, offering a surprisingly remote atmosphere and expansive views over the desolate granite plateaus of the Black Mount and Rannoch Moor.

Did You Know?

  • The name Meall nan Eun translates from Gaelic as 'Hill of the Birds.' While 'Meall' accurately describes its rounded, lumpy profile, the birds referenced are likely ptarmigan, which frequently inhabit the high, stony ground of the summit plateau.
  • It is almost always climbed in tandem with Stob Coir’an Albannaich. The two peaks are connected by a high col at 630 metres, which requires a significant drop and re-ascent that makes the pair a surprisingly demanding physical outing.
  • The summit provides an exceptional vantage point for looking east across the wild, uninhabited terrain of the Black Mount toward the remote waters of Loch Dochard and the vast expanse of Rannoch Moor.
  • Due to its broad and relatively featureless top, the plateau is notoriously difficult to navigate in the frequent mists of Glen Etive; finding the small summit cairn often requires a strict compass bearing to avoid the steep crags on its northern side.
  • The hill is so consistently overshadowed by its more dramatic neighbors that its primary claim to fame is often the quality of the view it provides of the far more impressive Ben Starav to the south.
