About Stob Chalum Mhic Griogair South Top

Sitting just south of its parent Graham, this Tump overlooks the eastern end of Loch Earn. The terrain is typical of the southern Highlands: a mix of steep grass and heather that requires effort but rewards with clear views south toward the rugged profiles of Ben Vorlich and Stùc a' Chroin.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Scottish Gaelic 'Stob Chalum Mhic Griogair', meaning the peak of Callum MacGregor, reflecting the historical presence of the MacGregor clan in the surrounding glens of Balquhidder and Strathearn.
  • The summit provides an excellent vantage point for surveying the transition between the Lowlands and Highlands, with the flat expanse of the Strathearn valley visible to the east beyond the village of St Fillans.
  • While the main summit of Stob Chalum Mhic Griogair is a Graham, this South Top is classified as a Tump, having the necessary thirty-metre drop on all sides to qualify as a distinct hill in its own right.
  • Given its status as a minor top of an already quiet hill, the most common sound at the summit is likely to be the wind in the heather rather than the chatter of other walkers.
