About Sgurr nan Eag

Occupying the southern end of the Black Cuillin ridge, this Munro offers a shattered, rock-strewn character. Reached via the spectacular Coir' a' Ghrunnda, its summit provides a stable gabbro platform with plunging views over the sea to the Small Isles and the dark, jagged spine of the ridge stretching north.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic for 'Peak of the Notches,' referring to the jagged, serrated profile of its summit ridge which is characteristic of the Black Cuillin’s weathered gabbro.
  • The first recorded ascent was made in 1880 by the brothers Charles and Lawrence Pilkington, pioneers of Scottish mountaineering who were responsible for mapping many of the first routes in the Skye Cuillin.
  • As the southernmost Munro in the Cuillin range, it serves as a stony sentinel overlooking the Atlantic; on clear days, the entire archipelago of the Small Isles—Rum, Eigg, Muck, and Canna—is visible across the water.
  • Unlike the slippery basalt found in other parts of the Highlands, Sgùrr nan Eag is composed of rough-textured gabbro, a rock prized by hillwalkers for its reliable, sandpaper-like grip even in damp conditions.
  • While the name translates to 'Peak of the Notches,' describing a Cuillin summit as 'notched' is a bit like describing a Highland winter as 'brisk'—it is technically accurate but somewhat fails to capture the full, jagged reality.
