Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic for 'Peak of the White Stones', referring to the prominent outcrops of white quartzite found near the summit. These light-coloured rocks catch the sun and make the peak stand out distinctly against the darker moorland of the surrounding Fannichs.
  • It is the central hub of the 'Great Fannichs' ridge, often reached via a narrow, airy col from Meall a' Chrasgaidh that overlooks the deep, dark waters of Loch a' Mhadaidh to the west.
  • The summit provides an exceptional vantage point for looking north into the Fisherfield Forest; the jagged skyline of An Teallach and the massive sandstone bulk of Slioch are particularly well-defined from this elevation.
  • Its most dramatic geographical feature is the precipitous eastern face, which drops 400 metres into Coire Mòr, a vast glacial bowl containing the remote and hidden lochan of Cadha na Beic.
  • Despite the name's promise of gleaming white stones, the prevailing West Highland weather usually ensures that visitors encounter the summit rocks in various shades of damp, cloud-covered grey.
