About Sgurr Choinnich

This narrow-ridged Munro stands deep within the Achnashellach Forest, offering a remote mountain experience. Characterised by steep, grassy slopes and craggy northern corries, it provides a superb high-level traverse when paired with Sgùrr a' Chaorachain. The approach from Glen Carron via the Allt a' Chonais burn emphasizes its rugged, North West Highland character.

Did You Know?

  • The name Sgùrr Choinnich translates from Scottish Gaelic as either 'Mossy Peak' or 'Kenneth’s Peak'. While many hills are named after local figures, the thick carpets of moss and grass on its southern flanks suggest the name is a literal description of the terrain.
  • At 999.3 metres, this is one of the closest mountains to the 1,000-metre mark in Scotland. It misses the four-figure milestone by less than a arm's length, making it a frequent talking point for Munro baggers obsessed with height statistics.
  • The summit ridge provides an exceptional vantage point for viewing the Torridon giants to the north; the distinctive quartzite-capped peaks of Beinn Eighe and the tiered sandstone ramparts of Liathach are clearly visible across Glen Carron.
  • Most walkers approach the hill via the long track through the Achnashellach Forest to reach the Bealach Bhearnais. This high pass is a historic crossing point and offers an efficient 'back door' route for those also looking to include the neighbouring Sgùrr nan Feartaig in their day.
  • Despite falling just 70 centimetres short of 1,000 metres, the final pull up its relentless, grassy flank will convince most legs that the Ordnance Survey was being unnecessarily stingy with the measurements.
