About Sgurr a' Gharg Gharaidh South Top

Rising above the remote Attadale Forest, this rocky top embodies the rugged character of the highland interior. Reaching the summit requires navigating trackless, often boggy ground, but the reward is a sense of deep isolation. It serves as a fine vantage point for surveying the sprawling deer forests and neighbouring ridges.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Sgùrr a' Gharg Ghàraidh, meaning 'Peak of the Rough Wall'. This likely describes the steep, stepped rock tiers that characterize the hill's eastern face.
  • The summit offers an excellent perspective on the remote Munros of Lurg Mhòr and Bheinn Dhorain to the north, as well as the long, narrow stretch of Loch Monar in the distance.
  • As a Tump with over 30 metres of prominence, it is often treated as a brief detour for walkers already traversing the high ground between the main summit and the glens leading towards Kyle of Lochalsh.
  • Given its name refers to a 'rough wall', any walker struggling through the pathless heather and crags should take comfort in the fact that the original Gaelic namers clearly shared their frustration.
