About Sgurr a' Bhealaich Dheirg

Situated at the heart of the Brothers of Kintail, this prominent Munro is defined by its impressive north-east ridge. Did You Know?

  • The name is Scottish Gaelic for the 'Peak of the Red Pass', likely referring to the Bealach a' Chait to the north-east, where the scree and soil take on a distinctively warm, reddish hue.
  • Most walkers tackle this as part of the 'Brothers of Kintail' ridge walk, a three-Munro traverse that bridges the gap between the Five Sisters to the west and the remote wilderness of Glen Affric to the east.
  • Unusually for a Munro, the true summit is located roughly 100 metres away from the main ridge path. It sits at the end of a narrow, rocky spur that requires a steady head and a short out-and-back scramble to reach the massive summit cairn.
  • From the top, the view south is dominated by the near-perfect linear wall of the South Glen Shiel Ridge, a 13-kilometre chain of peaks that stays above the 800-metre contour for almost its entire length.
  • The summit cairn is so disproportionately large for the narrow ridge it sits upon that it often serves as a primary navigational handrail for those attempting the ridge in the thick Atlantic mists common to Kintail.
  • The mountain is the highest point of the 'Brothers', standing taller than its immediate neighbours, Saileag and Aonach Meadhoin.
