About Sgarbh Breac

Rising from the wild, pathless interior of Jura, this rugged Marilyn offers a quieter alternative to the island's famous Paps. The terrain is quintessentially Hebridean, consisting of deep heather, hidden bogs, and broken quartzite. From the top, you gain a superb, intimate view over the intricate, island-studded waters of Loch Tarbert.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Gaelic 'Sgarbh Breac', meaning 'Speckled Cormorant'. This likely refers to the mottled appearance of the lichen-covered rocks and grey quartzite outcrops that break through the heather across its summit ridge.
  • Despite its modest height, the hill is situated in some of the most remote territory in the Southern Hebrides, far from the island's only road and requiring a long, arduous approach across trackless moorland.
  • The summit provides a clear line of sight across the Sound of Jura to the mainland ridges of Knapdale, as well as an unusual northern perspective on the massive scree slopes of Beinn an Oir.
  • On an island where the red deer population outnumbers human residents by roughly thirty to one, you are significantly more likely to encounter a rutting stag than a fellow hiker on these slopes.
