About Sail Chalmadale

Rising above the road between Lochranza and Sannox, this bulky Marilyn offers a contrasting perspective to Arran’s jagged granite heart. While the terrain is predominantly peat and heather, the reward is an unmatched profile of the 'Sleeping Warrior' peaks to the south, set against the blue waters of the Sound of Bute.

Did You Know?

  • The name 'Sail' translates from Gaelic as 'heel', often used to describe the blunt end of a ridge, while Chalmadale refers to the deep glen that separates these northern hills from the main Sannox range.
  • Because it sits near the Highland Boundary Fault, the hill is composed of Dalradian metamorphic rocks, giving it a rounder, boggier character than the sharp granite tors of Goatfell and Cir Mhòr seen to the south.
  • The summit provides one of the best angles to view the 'Sleeping Warrior', the famous profile formed by the peaks of Caisteal Abhail and the Witches' Step across North Glen Sannox.
  • It is the ideal destination for the walker who wants to admire Arran’s spectacular mountains from a safe distance, without the indignity of having to use their hands to scramble over them.
