About Roineabhal [Roneval]

Rising above the island of Unst, this modest summit is the most northerly Marilyn in the British Isles. The ascent crosses rough, wind-scoured moorland typical of the Shetland landscape. From the top, the views are expansive, looking over the sheltered waters of Baltasound towards the distant, rugged cliffs of Saxa Vord.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Old Norse 'hrani-fjall', meaning 'ridge hill', a description of the hog-backed shape of the summit crest.
  • As the northernmost Marilyn in the UK, its height of 201 metres belies its prominence in a landscape where few other points offer such an unobstructed perspective.
  • The hill is composed of serpentine rock, part of a rare geological ophiolite complex where sections of the Earth's oceanic crust and mantle have been pushed onto the land.
  • From the summit, walkers can look north past the hills of Unst to see the white tower of the Muckle Flugga lighthouse, marking the northernmost tip of the British Isles.
  • Given the exposed nature of the island, a 200-metre climb here often feels significantly more substantial than the modest statistics suggest.
