Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'Yellow Summit,' likely a reference to the distinctive hue of the grasses and mosses that cling to its high slopes, contrasting with the grey granite of the surrounding peaks.
  • It forms part of the 'Stacach' ridge, a serrated line of granite tors that requires some light, hands-on scrambling for those traversing between the summit of Goatfell and North Goatfell.
  • The summit provides a superb vantage point over the steep-sided Coire na h-Uaimh, with a clear line of sight to the notched profile of Ceum na Caillich, better known to locals as the Witch's Step.
  • The coarse-grained granite found here provides exceptional grip for walkers in the dry, but the smooth, weathered slabs can become deceptively treacherous during the island's frequent Atlantic rain showers.
  • Despite being one of the highest points on the island, it is frequently bypassed by hikers rushing toward Goatfell, making it a quieter spot to observe the ferry crossing the Firth of Clyde far below.
