About Monawee

Situated on the eastern fringes of the Mounth near Ballater, this rounded heather-clad Tump offers a quiet escape from the busier Cairngorm plateaus. Reaching the broad summit provides a stunning perspective across Glen Muick towards the dark, craggy corries of Lochnagar and the sprawling, wild expanse of the White Mounth.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a phonetic anglicisation of the Gaelic Monadh Bhuì, translated as the 'Yellow Hill', likely referring to the distinct colour of the hill's grasses and sedges in the autumn light.
  • It is frequently bypassed by walkers heading for the more famous Mount Keen to the east or Lochnagar to the west, making it an excellent spot for those seeking seclusion within the Royal Deeside area.
  • From the summit, the eye is drawn across the depths of Glen Muick to the massive cliffs of the Lochnagar massif, while to the north, the distinctive profile of Morven rises above the Dee Valley.
  • At 695.6 metres, it remains tantalisingly close to the 700-metre threshold, a fact that tends to bother map-obsessed hikers far more than it bothers the hill itself.
