About Mid Rig

Sitting within the quiet Ettrick Hills, this 615-metre peak offers a classic Southern Upland experience. The terrain is dominated by rolling grass and occasional peat hags. Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Scots and Northern English 'rig', meaning a long, narrow ridge or the crest of a hill, often used to describe the undulating spurs of the Southern Uplands.
  • Hillwalkers typically reach the summit as part of a high-level traverse from the Ettrick Valley, often pairing it with the neighbouring Bodesbeck Law to the north-east.
  • The summit offers an excellent vantage point across the Moffat Water valley towards the craggy eastern face of White Coomb and the high plateau surrounding the Grey Mare's Tail.
  • Despite standing at over 2,000 feet, the hill lacks the 30 metres of prominence required to be listed as a Donald, keeping it off the radar of most peak-baggers.
  • In the Ettrick Hills, a 'rig' is a place where you can find either absolute silence or a boot-full of bog-water; this particular summit is remarkably consistent in providing both.
