About Meall na h-Eilde

Rising between the Great Glen and Glen Garry, this bulky Corbett offers a quieter alternative to the busier peaks of nearby Lochaber. Characterised by its broad, heathery slopes and rounded profile, the summit provides a sweeping vantage point over Loch Lochy and the rugged hinterland of Knoydart.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic Meall na h-Eilde, meaning 'hill of the hind'. This suggests a long-standing historical association with red deer stalking in the high ground between Loch Arkaig and Glen Garry.
  • This hill is typically climbed in tandem with its neighbour, Meall Coire Lochain, which sits to the southwest. A high-level ridge walk connects the two, providing an efficient day's walking from the road near Achnacarry.
  • The summit cairn serves as an excellent grandstand for the Great Glen; the view stretches south to the looming mass of the Ben Nevis range and the Grey Corries, and north across the waters of Loch Garry.
  • Though the name translates as 'Hill of the Hind', you may find that the local red deer are significantly more adept at navigating the lower, boggy slopes than a hillwalker attempting to find a dry line through the peat hags.
