About Meall na Drochaide

Rising steeply above the southern shores of Loch Broom, this rugged North West Highland summit serves as a superb vantage point for Ullapool. Primarily a grassy and heather-clad ridge, its position offers a grandstand view of the An Teallach massif across the water and the sprawling Ben Dearg group to the east.

Did You Know?

  • Derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Meall na Drochaide', the name translates as 'Hill of the Bridge', likely referencing a crossing point over the Allt nan Corrach burn which carves a deep glen on its eastern flank.
  • Its position provides an exceptional birds-eye view of the village of Ullapool; from the summit, the symmetrical white-washed streets of the 18th-century fishing port are clearly laid out directly across the deep waters of Loch Broom.
  • The ridge is an ideal spot for identifying the giants of the North West, including the spectacular skyline of An Teallach to the west and the massive inland bulk of Ben Dearg to the southeast.
  • Despite being named the 'Hill of the Bridge', walkers will find no civil engineering here; the only way across the surrounding peat hags is a leap of faith or a very sturdy pair of waterproof gaiters.
