About Meall na Cnap Laraich

Rising above the head of Glen Clova, this rounded Grampian shoulder offers a quieter perspective on the busy Mounth plateaus. Often bypassed by walkers heading for the Munro summit of Mayar, it provides a rugged, heathery vantage point overlooking the deep glacial trough of the South Esk valley and the vast Prosen estate.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Meall na Cnap Làraich', which translates roughly as the hill of the hillock of the ruin or site, likely referring to an old shieling or structure on its lower slopes.
  • Though it lacks the status of its higher neighbours, the summit offers a superior view of the dramatic Great Gully and the craggy bowl of Winter Corrie on the western face of Mayar.
  • The hill is frequently visited as a short detour from the Kilbo Path, an ancient pass that connects Glen Prosen with Glen Doll and remains one of the most popular ascent routes in the Angus Glens.
  • While hikers on the main ridge are busy ticking off Munros, they often miss the specific southward vista from this point, which stretches clearly down the long, wooded furrow of Glen Prosen towards Kirriemuir.
  • It serves as an excellent spot for a quiet lunch, provided you don't mind the silent judgement of the ptarmigan who are far more likely to be your only company here than fellow walkers.
