Did You Know?

  • The name is a relic of the Viking presence in the Hebrides, likely derived from the Old Norse 'melr', meaning sand-dune or lyme grass, and 'fjall', meaning mountain. This refers to the hill’s position rising directly above the sandy machair plains of the Uig coast.
  • Despite its modest height of 574 metres, it holds the title of the highest peak on the Isle of Lewis. Its isolation on the far western edge of the island makes it feel significantly more alpine and remote than the map suggests.
  • The summit provides one of the best maritime vantage points in Scotland; on a clear day, the Flannan Isles are prominent to the west, while the jagged stacks of St Kilda can be seen some 40 miles further out to sea.
  • The terrain transitions sharply from the soft, boggy heather of the lower slopes to a summit plateau dominated by Lewisian Gneiss, where the ground is strewn with grey boulders and shattered rock.
  • As the first major obstacle for weather systems traveling three thousand miles across the Atlantic, the summit cairn is less a place for a leisurely lunch and more a place to test the structural integrity of your waterproofs.
