About Lord Berkeley's Seat [Stony Seat]

Sitting on An Teallach’s spectacular ridge, this Munro Top is famous for its overhanging sandstone ledge. It offers a terrifyingly airy perspective over the depths of Glas Tholl. From this precarious perch, the views across the Fisherfield Forest to the peaks of Beinn Dearg and the Summer Isles are truly world-class.

Did You Know?

  • The name commemorates Lord Berkeley, an early 20th-century climber who famously sat on the edge of the overhanging slab with his legs dangling over the 500-metre drop to prove he didn't suffer from vertigo.
  • The traditional Gaelic name is Suidheachan na Cloiche, which translates as 'Stony Seat', a literal description of the flat sandstone platform that forms the summit.
  • Reaching the seat requires a committed scramble along the Corrag Bhuidhe pinnacles; those less comfortable with exposure often use the bypass path that skirts the crags on the western side.
  • From the summit, the 'Great Wilderness' of Fisherfield is laid out to the south, with the remote Munros of Ruadh Stac Mòr and A' Mhaighdean clearly visible across the glen.
  • The cliff beneath the seat is composed of Torridonian sandstone, layered in thick horizontal beds that create the distinctive tiered architecture of the entire An Teallach massif.
  • It is perhaps the only seat in the Highlands where sitting down is considered an act of extreme bravery rather than an excuse for a break.
