About Hunt Law

Tucked away in the Manor Hills south of Peebles, this 639-metre Tump is a classic Southern Upland dome. Its broad, grassy slopes offer straightforward walking, often tackled as part of a high-level circuit above the Manor Water. The summit provides a sense of deep isolation, overlooking the rugged head of the Glensax Burn.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Old English hlāw, a common term in the Scottish Borders for a rounded hill, while 'Hunt' refers to its historical status as part of the noble hunting grounds that once spanned the Tweedsmuir Hills.
  • The hill is frequently climbed as part of the 'Glensax Horseshoe,' a long high-level circuit that includes the neighbouring summits of Dun Rig and Birkscairn Hill.
  • From the summit, the view to the south-west is dominated by the massive bulk of Broad Law and its prominent telecommunications tower, while the triple peaks of the Eildon Hills are visible to the east on clear days.
  • The hill sits on the watershed between the Manor Water and the Glensax Burn, both of which are significant tributaries of the River Tweed.
  • Given the name, you might expect a chase, but the only thing likely to be pursuing you across these grassy slopes is a particularly persistent Peeblesshire wind.
