About Gathersnow Hill

Tucked away in the Southern Uplands, this rounded Graham is the second-highest point in the Culter Hills. It offers a quieter, more expansive experience than its popular neighbor, Tinto. The terrain is typical of the Borders: broad, grassy, and occasionally boggy, providing clear lines of sight toward the more rugged Tweedsmuir Hills.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a literal descriptive term in Scots-English, highlighting the hill's topographical tendency to collect deep snow drifts in its hollows which often persist long after the surrounding summits have cleared.
  • Hillwalkers frequently combine the summit with Culter Fell to the north; however, the intervening col near Mossy Burn is notorious for its complex peat hags, requiring some careful navigation and nimble footwork.
  • The summit offers a commanding view over the Fruid Reservoir to the southeast, with the massive, antenna-topped dome of Broad Law clearly visible across the Tweed Valley.
  • Despite its evocative name suggesting a pristine alpine environment, your most likely gathering on a typical day will be a substantial layer of black peat mud on your gaiters.
