Did You Know?
- •The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Garbh Chìoch Mhòr', meaning 'Big Rough Breast'. This refers to its craggy character and its position alongside the even more prominent Sgùrr na Cìche (Peak of the Breast).
- •An impressive historic dry-stone wall follows the crest of the ridge over the summit. It is a remarkable feat of manual labour, having been constructed across some of the most remote and inaccessible terrain in the Highlands.
- •The summit provides a focused view down the blue waters of Loch Quoich to the east, while the view north-west looks directly into the wild, uninhabited heart of the Knoydart peninsula.
- •It is usually climbed as part of a demanding three-Munro circuit. The traverse between this summit and Sgùrr nan Coireachan involves navigating a series of shattered quartzite towers and steep, heathery gaps.
- •The 'Rough Bounds' description is used with total sincerity here; the terrain consists almost entirely of geological features designed to snag a boot or test the waterproofing of your gaiters.
