About Farragon Hill North Top

Rising above the Tay Valley near Aberfeldy, this rugged Grampian shoulder offers a wilder perspective than its more famous neighbours. Primarily heathery moorland, the ascent rewards walkers with a clear sightline across to the symmetrical cone of Schiehallion and the sprawling summits of the Beinn a' Ghlo massif across the strath.

Did You Know?

  • The name Farragon is thought to derive from the Gaelic An Fharcaid, implying a watch-tower or high lookout point, fitting for a ridge that commands such a wide view over the surrounding Perthshire straths.
  • This top is most often visited as an extension of the climb to its parent Corbett, Farragon Hill, located to the south. The high ground between the two summits provides a sweeping vista over Loch Tummel and the iconic Queen’s View.
  • The hill sits on the edge of a geologically significant area; the nearby Foss Mine has been a major UK source of barite for decades, though the North Top itself remains a quiet, heathery sanctuary away from industrial activity.
  • From this northern vantage point, the distinctive, shark-fin profile of Schiehallion dominates the western horizon, while the rolling summits of the Atholl hills stretch out to the north.
  • Despite its classification as a Tump, the rough heather and occasional peat hags ensure that reaching the summit feels like more of an achievement than its modest 30-metre prominence might suggest to a map-reader.
