Did You Know?
- •The name is a relic of the region’s linguistic history, likely deriving from the Scottish Gaelic Aonach, meaning a high place or moorland ridge, though the surrounding hills also carry heavy influences from Old Norse.
- •The hill overlooks the Afton Water, the river celebrated by Robert Burns in his 1791 poem 'Sweet Afton'; walkers descending its northern slopes look directly down into the valley that inspired the famous lines.
- •On a clear day, the summit provides a specific vantage point over the Afton Reservoir to the west and the massive, rounded profile of Cairnsmore of Carsphairn to the south.
- •Despite being classified as a Hump, the actual ascent often involves more of a 'squelch', as the broad summit plateau is notorious for its ability to retain peat-stained water long after the rain has stopped.
