About Doune Hill

Rising above the western shores of Loch Lomond, this prominent Graham is the highest point of the Luss Hills. Its broad, grassy slopes offer a quieter alternative to the busier Arrochar Alps nearby. The summit provides a superb perspective on the distinctive profile of The Cobbler and the vast expanse of the loch below.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic Dùn, meaning a fort or fortified hill. While there is no archaeological evidence of a fort on the summit, the name likely refers to its commanding, defensive appearance overlooking the surrounding glens.
  • As the highest point of the Luss Hills, the summit offers an exceptional vantage point across the water to the massive bulk of Ben Lomond, while the jagged peaks of Ben Ima and Ben Narnain dominate the northwestern horizon.
  • The hill is often climbed as part of a high-level horseshoe from Inverbeg, typically linked with Mid Hill and Cruach an t-Sithein to stay above the thick bracken and steep slopes of Glen Douglas.
  • It is classified as a Graham, a status reserved for Scottish hills between 2,000 and 2,500 feet with at least 150 metres of prominence, making it a primary objective for those exploring the southern Highlands.
  • If the ground feels remarkably spongy even in midsummer, you have encountered the legendary peat bogs of the Luss Hills, which are famously capable of retaining water long after the rest of the region has dried out.
